install and configure computer hardware

Install and configure computer hardware

1. Assemble Computer Hardware

1.1 Unit assembly is planned and prepared to ensure OH & S policies and procedures are followed in accordance with systems requirements.

 - Prevention Practices and Quality issues OHS Guidelines to help with the application and interpretation of sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation ("OHSR") and with divisions of the Workers Compensation Act (the "Act") that relate to health and safety. OHS Guidelines are not intended to provide exclusive interpretations, but to assist with compliance. Many sections of the Act and the OHSR have associated OHS Guidelines

1.2 Materials necessary to complete the work are identified and obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked against systems requirements

Screwdrivers and nut drivers. You should have, at a minimum, small- and medium-sized Phillips and flat screwdrivers and a 1/4" nut driver

Needle-Nosed Pliers or Forceps. Very small needle-nosed pliers, forceps, or tweezers are very handy for removing and inserting jumpers on motherboards and hard drives.

Cable Ties. Plastic cable ties are useful for neatly bundling wires and cables away from fans and other components inside the computer.

Anti-Static Kit. An anti-static kit consists of a rubberized mat and a wrist strap that attaches to both the mat and the computer or electronic device you're working on.
.
Heat Sink Compound. Heat sink compound improves the thermal efficiency of heat sinks and improves cooling.

Canned Air or Canless Air Duster. Canned air or a canless air duster air is used to blow dust out of the nooks and crannies of your computer.

Pill Bottle or a Small Container. You'll need a pill bottle or other small container to hold the various screws, jumpers, and other small parts used to assemble and configure a homebuilt computer.

1.3 Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out the installation work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct operation and safety.
Eye protection is protective gear for the eyes, and sometimes face, designed to reduce the risk of injury.

Digital multi-meter is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical values—principally voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms).

Wire stripper. A wire stripper is a small, hand-held device used to strip the electrical insulation from electric wires.

Pliers are a hand tool used to hold objects firmly, possibly developed from tongs used to handle hot metal in Bronze Age Europe.

Screwdriver has a handle and a shaft, ending in a tip the user puts into the screw head before turning the handle.

Soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two work pieces.

Desoldering pump also known as solder sucker is a small mechanical device which sucks the liquid/molten solder from the joint where the components are mounted.

Allen wrench or Allen key (0.05 – 0.25 inch), is a simple tool used to drive bolts and screws with hexagonal sockets in their heads.

Flashlight is a portable hand-held electric light. The source of the light is usually an incandescent light bulb or light-emitting diode.

IC extractor is a tool for safely and quickly removing integrated circuits (ICs) from their sockets. The main purpose of using this tool is to avoid bending the socket pins and to avoid damage through electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Anti-static wrist strap is a key piece of safety gear that helps to prevent the buildup of static electricity near sensitive electronics or other projects where static charge could damage electronics or cause safety issues.

LAN testers can determine  IP addresses, identify polarity, connected port and link connectivity. Furthermore, they can test fiber optic cables.

Crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of them in a way that causes them to hold each other.

1.4 Computer hardware is assembled in accordance with established procedures and systems requirements.

- Computer hardware includes the physical, tangible parts or components of a computer, such as the cabinet, central processing unit, monitor, keyboard, computer data storage, graphics card, sound card, speakers and motherboard.

1.5 Basic-input-output-system (BIOS) configuration is performed in accordance with hardware requirements.

- Asus BIOS Keys
As with Acer, the most common key is F2.
Depending on your model, it might also be the Delete or Insert key, and less commonly F10.
- HP BIOS Keys
Keys most commonly used on HP machines to enter setup include F10 and Esc.
On some HP computers F1F2F6, or F11 will open the gates to the BIOS.
On HP Tablet PCs F10 or F12 will get you into the BIOS.

2. Computer systems and networks (Technologies )

Network and Computer Systems Administrators are responsible for the day-to-day operation of an organization's computer networks. They organize, install, and support an organization's computer systems, including:

  • Local area networks (LANs)
  • Wide area networks (WANs)
  • Network segments
  • Intranets
  • Data Communication Systems

Why GCC?

The Computer Systems and Network Technologies curriculum offers background in:

  • Network technologies
  • Desktop support
  • Server administration
  • Computer systems
  • Network support

You'll apply theory hands-on in labs for assembling, testing, and troubleshooting computer systems. Our technical electives will help you expand your knowledge of software and development tools.

Career Opportunities

By earning your Computer Systems and Network Technologies Degree, you can work as a:

  • Network Administrator
  • Network Support Specialist
  • Network Control Technician
  • Network Systems Technician
  • LAN/WAN Technician
  • Hardware/Telcom Field Technician

3. Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is clothing or equipment designed to be worn by someone to protect them from the risk of injury or illness.

Safety Goggles: Primary protectors intended to shield the eyes against flying fragments, objects, large chips, and particles.

Masks  protect the mouth and nose, goggles protect the eyes, and face shields protect the entire face.

Gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses.

Anti-static wristband or Anti-static wrist strap is one such very useful antistatic device that is normally worn in the hand. ... This device helps a person to stay grounded while it also prevents the build-up of static electricity on the electronic device that can result in serious damage

 4. Maintenance

Software updates

Computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) is designed to act as a database that contains information about your business maintenance activities. You can use this data to help your maintenance team do their assignments more effectively, for instance, they can select the machines that need maintenance and decide which storerooms have the parts necessary to repair them. The software can also help managers to make the right decisions, for instance, they can determine the cost of fixing machine breakdowns in comparison to the cost of precaution maintenance for all machines. CMMS information is also used to confirm regulatory compliance. Start by checking our leader Hippo CMMS, and other recommended solutions in this category.
